How to pray for your son – Prayer is a powerful thing… arguably THE most powerful thing we can do for our children.

Yes, we have the responsibility of raising them to be kind, loving, Godly people, but, without prayer, we are falling short as parents.

I would encourage you to make a habit of covering your children in prayer every day. Even your adult children. Of course, the most obvious prayers will be for their immediate needs, such as dealing with a difficult school situation, a bout with anxiety, or an important decision. But, some of the best prayers for your son can be found in the Bible scriptures, themselves.

There are two basic techniques for praying the Scriptures. One is to use prayers already in the Bible, but by substituting someone’s name for the pronouns used in the prayer. Many of these prayers can be found in the Psalms and, often, in the writings of Paul, but they are found throughout the Bible. Two, we can create prayers out of Scripture. Both techniques are used in the following prayers.

Bible Scripture Prayers for Your Son

Isaiah 41:10– So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.

Thank you, Lord, that we can rest and trust in your strength. Thank you for never leaving my son, no matter where he goes or who he is with. May your strength and righteousness be real and evident to my son.

John 10:9– I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture.

I pray for my son’s salvation, Lord. May he enter, by you, the door. I pray he finds your restful pasture. Open his eyes to see you.

Psalm 51:10-12Create in (my son) a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within (him). Do not cast (him) from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from (him). Restore to (him) the joy of your salvation and grant (him) a willing spirit, to sustain (him).

John 10:4– When he has brought out all his own, he goes ahead of them, and his sheep follow him because they know his voice.

Thank you, Lord, for being the loving shepherd you are. Thank you for going before my son on his journey through life. I pray that you would open his ears to hear you and give him discernment to hear your voice over all the worldly voices coming at him.

Jeremiah 29:11– “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

Lord, I pray you will make your plans clear to my son. I pray that he would rest in the promise that you will give him hope and a future.

Psalm 119:36-37Turn (his) heart toward your statutes and not toward selfish gain. Turn (his) eyes away from worthless things; preserve (his) life according to your word.

Romans 15:13May (you) the God of hope fill (my son) with all joy and peace as (he) trusts in (you), so that (he) may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.

Psalm 4:1Answer (him) when (he) calls to you, my righteous God. Give (him) relief from (his) distress; have mercy on (him) and hear (his) prayer.

Proverbs 14:29– Whoever is patient has great understanding, but one who is quick-tempered displays folly.

I pray, Lord, that you would grant my son patience and understanding. Save him from his quick-tempered nature.

Ephesians 3:14-21For this reason, I kneel before (you) Father, from whom (your) whole family in heaven and on earth derives its name. I pray that out of (your) glorious riches (you) may strengthen (my son) with power through your Spirit in (my son’s) inner being, so that (you, Lord) may dwell in (my son’s) heart through faith. And I pray that (my son), being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the saints, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is (your) love, (Lord). And (for my son) to know this love that surpasses knowledge – that (my son) may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of (you) God. Now to (you, Father) who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to (your) power that is at work within us, to (you) be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen.

More Prayers for Your Son

Update September 2022 – It has become apparent to me that many of us mothers (and fathers) long for our sons’ salvation and sanctification with our whole hearts. I did not know when I published this blog post 3 years ago, that it would have such an impact on so many people around the world. God is using these prayers for His glory! He hears our prayers, ladies! He is faithful! To God be the glory, amen!

Here are some futher Scriptures you can use to pray for your son:

Acts 3:19(May my son) repent of (his) sins and turn to (you) God, so that (his) sins may be wiped away.

2 Timothy 2:22(May he) run from anything that stimulates youthful lusts. Instead, (may he) persue righteous living, faithfulness, love, and peace. (And may he) enjoy the companionship of those who call on the Lord with pure hearts.

Acts 20:24(May he) consider (his) life worth nothing to (him); (may his) only aim (be) to finish the race and complete the task (that you) Lord Jesus has given (him) – the task of testifying to the good news of God’s grace.

2 Peter 3:9 – The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead, he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.

Thank you, Lord, for your patience with my son and for your desire for him not to perish. I pray you would lead him to repentance for your glory and for his salvation.

Romans 12:2 – Do not be conformed to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is – his good, pleasing, and perfect will.

Lord, I pray for the renewing of my son’s mind. Help him to see where is “conforming to the patterns of this world”, so that he can break those thoughts and habits. Help him to discern your good, pleasing, and perfect will.

Habakkuk 3:17-18 Though the fig tree does not bud and there are no grapes on the vines, though the olive crop fails and the fields produce no food, though there are no sheep in the pen and no cattle in the stalls, (let him) rejoice in (you) Lord, (so that he would) be joyful in God (his) Savior.

2 Timothy 1:7 – For God gave us a spirit not of fear, but of power and love and self-control.

Thank you, Lord, for the spirit of power and love and self-control that you have given my son. I pray that this truth would give him courage to follow you. I pray that he would trust you no matter where you may lead him.

2 Thessalonians 3:3 – But the Lord is faithful; he will strengthen you and guard you from the evil one.

Lord, I pray this promise of yours over my son, now. Strengthen him and guard him today from the evil one that wants to attack him. And, I pray he would know that that strength in him is from you and you alone.

1 Corinthians 10:13 – No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will never let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.

As my son struggles with temptation, I pray your Spirit would remind him of these truths: that he will never be tempted beyond what he can endure and that you have provided a way out of these temptations.

Psalm 5:11But let (him) take refuge in you (and) be glad; let (him) ever sing for joy. Spread your protection over (him), that (he) who loves your name may rejoice in you.

Psalm 25:4-5Show (him) your ways, Lord, teach (him) your paths. Guide (him) in your truth and teach (him), for you are God (his) Savior; and… my hope (as his parent) is in you all day long.
